Question for Color Breeders

Post by cattus »

I finally have a small herd of Haflingers, based on their conformation. Naturally, not a single one of them is flaxen chestnut, much less that lighter shade of chestnut that's nearly palomino.

So, here's my question for you color breeders and geneticists out there: What's the best way to get flaxen chestnut into my herd? I'm open to all suggestions!

4* Haflinger Grade horses! I love grade horses. Such useful beasts.
Grade horses with the right colour and conformation bred and then put to your Haflingers. That way you can keep working on improving your Haflingers stats and such while you work on getting the right haflingers, and don't risk getting horses that are actually other breeds. You can then work your 'half Haflinger' horses back into your herd. Cos flaxen and chestnut are tricky its going to take you a while just to get flaxen and chestnut, but once you are there you can then start working on breeding the lighter horses and selecting for the right shades of chestnut.
(All while infusing the odd grade horse to keep your blood fresh and COI down!)

Yikes, another grade project! :)

I had to use 4* Haffie grades to get the right type in my Arabian-Forest step. Guess now I'll get cracking on color. Luckily, I kept some of my 4* grade mares on the side.

You can also Search for 'flaxen' in the Horses For Sale and buy a flaxen horse to first breed to your Grade horses.

Grade horses are amazing! Not to mention they can show just as well as any other horses! I have like 3 Grade horses that are Grand Champions. lol But best of all you can work on color and white patters without ruining your heard, then you can breed a purebred horse with a Grade and get a Half.

Example:

Appaloosa x Grade = Half Appaloosa
Appaloosa x Grade = Mixed Appaloosa

Haflinger x Grade = Half Haflinger
Haflinger x Grade = Mixed Haflinger

It's official. My horses hate me.

My reshaped line of Thoroughbreds are throwing me 4* Flaxen Chestnuts out the wazoo.

Do you think for a second that my Haflinger-grades are doing the same? Of course not! If it's 4*, it's some funky color that won't work. If it's Flaxen Chestnut, the eval is so far off, it can't be corrected. *sigh* They hate me.

/end rant ... back to the breeding barn.
