Help the Bad Breeder
Hi guys as you may already know I am attempting to become a breeder but I am failing.
So the other day I was trying to breed an Appendix Quarter Horse.
So first I tried a female Thoroughbred and a male Quarter Horse. I tried TWICE. Then I figured I was doing it wrong so I put a female Quarter Horse and a male Thoroughbred. I tried ONCE.
And it still didn't work!!!
Someone PLEASE tell me what I am doing wrong... Help!
Thanks

Re: Help the Bad Breeder
It's most likely because the body type of the two horses you are breeding aren't producing a foal that lines up with the Appendix body typeBri56830 wrote:Hi guys as you may already know I am attempting to become a breeder but I am failing.

Would you mind linking the male and female QHs and TBs?

Perhaps I can help you out!

Re: Help the Bad Breeder
Thank you! First, the female already passed on and the male on is a stud.

Here is what I suggest:
1. Buy a Appendix Quarter Horse Evaluation book (you can find it here: http://www.horseworldonline.net/market/store/book)
2. Then evaluate your horses against it (both pairs)
3. breed the ones with the best Appendix Eval. together (it doesn't matter which breed is the stallion or mare)
You may have to look for a while, I have quite a few TB's and my sister breeds Quarter Horses so I can access any of these if you need help finding a good match.
Here is a Appendix Evaluation on one of my stallions on my side: (this stallion would be a good match... one of your mares however, should have a Type [Rating Good] in her Appendix eval.)
Evaluation
Overall 4
Horses Basic Physique
Criteria Ideal & Rating
Height Mature Range 14.1hh to 15.2hh
This horse is 15.0hh [Rating Good]
Rating is based on estimated mature height.
Build Light to Medium
Your Horse is Light [Rating Good]
Build is 75% Type and 25% Body Size. Build is a reference, but not a requirement for creating a new breed.
Body Size 10% to 30%
Your Horse is 21.5% [Rating Good]
Body Size describes the overall bulk of the horse.
Type 75% Horse Type to 55% Pony Type
Your Horse is 77% Horse Type [Rating Poor]
Type is the description of leg length to body length.
Sadly, even if you nailed the eval you still might not get the perfect foal... so just keep trying... you will get it at some point.
P.S. the stallion who I used for example is available for flexible studding.
Good Luck

Re: Help the Bad Breeder
So I evaluated my Quarter Horse mare and she had a poor body size. Will she still make a good foal if the sire is good?

I snooped around until I found a TBx QH cross and evaled the horse's parents:Bri56830 wrote:Hi guys as you may already know I am attempting to become a breeder but I am failing.

http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/2286119 (*3 eval [Moderate] not a ideal for breeding a AQH but possible with the right mare)
http://www.horseworldonline.net/horse/profile/2255450 (N/A AQH eval, she is your problem, she has no AQH characteristics, so could almost never produce a AQH)
My stallion is available, just let me know if you want to use him or eval yours.

Re: Help the Bad Breeder
Oh yes Pearl Elite used to be mine and she was the one I tried on.

Re: Help the Bad Breeder
And I tried the stallion you mentioned.

You already have some good answers. Here's also a topic that gets into the intricacies a little more deeply, so that you can further understand the WHY and the WHERE you might be missing it.Bri56830 wrote:Hi guys as you may already know I am attempting to become a breeder but I am failing.
