P
Kaleidoscope

Okay, I'm a bit lost with this one. I thought she might be a palomino, but she seems to dark for that. Then I thought maybe silver bay, but she's not red enough. Anyone know what colour she is? Thanks

Re: P
You're right that she's palomino. The darkness looks like it's caused by sooty to me.

Re: P
She also is carrying a silver gene that she got from her sire. So her color is Silver Sooty Palomino.

Re: P
Silver isn't visible (since she's red-based) so I wouldn't put it in the color name.

Re: P
This is not necessarily true. Her sire may be heterozygous for Silver, so it's just a possibility (not a guarantee) that Kaleidoscope carries Silver.Katstica wrote:She also is carrying a silver gene that she got from her sire. So her color is Silver Sooty Palomino.

Re: P
Based on Kaleidoscope's mane and tail color, I am pretty confident that she carries silver. A regular palomino would not have a grey mane(unless sooty can do that). It's also worth noting that both of the sire's parents carry silver, so it is possible that he is homozygous (ZZ). Even if he had heterozygous silver (Zz) it would still be a 50% chance to carry it down to the offspring.nyraeia wrote:This is not necessarily true. I am still learning about genetics, so please let me know if sooty can also cause a mane to go silver, as I am not currently aware if it does or does not.
edit;; Oops! I looked at the picture of her as a newborn and can agree that she does not have silver? I am pretty sure that silver shows at birth, and she had a pure white mane at birth. Haha, genetics can be tricky. Still would like to know if sooty can change mane color though, I am curious.

Re: P
Yes, sooty can change mane colour, and often does itKatstica wrote:Based on Kaleidoscope's mane and tail color, I am pretty confident that she carries silver. Thank you! I learned something today.Aela wrote:Yes, sooty can change mane colour, and often does it

Re: P
Since you already got your other question answered, I just wanted to add that yes, silver does show at birth. And palomino with the silver gene would look like just plain palomino. Red-based horses (chestnut, palomino, etc) don't show silver if they have it.Katstica wrote:I am pretty sure that silver shows at birth
If you haven't seen it already, this link is super helpful for learning genetics. I use it to double-check myself often.
