Crossbreds

Post by RiverCat »

Hello!

I'm really confused about this thing: when you creating new breed, does it really important which parent will be dam or sire?
For example, Akhal-tekes. I got several Akhal-tekke foals from Turkmene mares and Arabian stallions, but otherwise, Arabian mares and Turkmene stalions will produce Arabian-Turkmene cross.
Is this right? So it work for all other breeds, and we need to check which breed will fit to be mare, and wich will be for the stallion?

Thank you!

No, it does not matter. What you experienced was coincidence. Maybe the horses you chose did not fit together well enough to create a new breed?

nyraeia, well, so how do I get to know which horses will enough fit to create new breed? In the Breeds Wiki says which horses is need to create new breed, so I just found the certain ones. Just usual horses, purebred. Sadly, I rehomed almost all turkmene-arabian cross. I have only one mare, which is Turkmene-arabian. She was from purebred arabian mare and part turkmene stallion. She is 4* for the akhal-tekke , but even breeded with purebred akhal-teke stallion she produces half akhal-teke foals. Confused much about this.

Also, could somebody tell me about how work this in example of the Trakehner breed: in the wiki says, that we need [ Turkmene x Mongolian ] x [ Arabian x Thoroughbred ]. So if we actually need about 25% of each breed, does it really important to use certain cross? I mean, why not [ Turkmene x Thoroughbred ] x [ Arabian x Mongolian] for example? I tried to check, and this will continue with the grade horse. But why? Or there is only one way to get new breed?

To produce an Akhal Teke, you need an Arabian and a Turkmene. The better their evaluation for Akhal Teke, the better your chances.
But even if your Arab is 4* for Akhal Teke and your Turkmene is 4* for Akhal Teke, there's no guarantee they will produce one --> see the mare you got. She has the correct parents and meets the Akhal Teke criteria - it's just bad luck that she's "only" an Arabian x Turkmene.

If your Arabians and your Turkmenes are less than 4* for Akhal Teke, they may still produce one, the chance is just lower.
Example: Akhal Teke height is 14.1hh to 16.3hh. Your Turkmene mare is 16.5hh and your Arabian stallion is 14.0hh --> they could still produce a foal that falls into the correct range. They could also produce a foal that's too tall for it to be an Akhal Teke.

So, I guess you are talking about this mare:

She is, like you said, Arabian x Turkmene. You have a chance for Akhal Teke if you breed her to other Arabian x Turkmenes, see this thread.
Bred to an Akhal Teke, she will always produce Half Akhal Tekes. If you breed these Half Akhal Tekes to other Akhal Tekes, you will get Part Akhal Tekes and - if you do this for enough generations - you will get a full Akhal Teke.
Look at this girl's pedigree for an example:
