Tobiano Info Request
In some of my breeds, the new tobiano is no big deal since tobiano is an acceptable color but in others I've been worried about crossing it in. Now with my quest breeding, I'm getting to play with it some. I'm curious about the genetics behind the level of white and whether or not minimally marked (blaze, star, socks, stockings, etc.) horses can have flashy foals bred to solid horses. I'd love to add some cute markings to some of my breeds, but not if it ends up with a bunch of, say, paint Andalusians or Thoroughbreds. I clicked search in forums but this got a huge amount of results so if anyone has some guides saved and would be willing to share links, I'd be really grateful. Also good luck on all of your projects, including tobiano or not.

I was trying to breed blazes, stars and socks to my herd or Lipizzaners. If you want only stars, blazes and socks you should cross your horse with AC Turkmene, Forest Horses, Belgians or Tarpans. I have made a mistake to cross them to NAB and I can't get rid of big white patches.Kingsley wrote:In some of my breeds, the new tobiano is no big deal since tobiano is an acceptable color but in others I've been worried about crossing it in. Follow Pieta's advice.Kingsley wrote:In some of my breeds, the new tobiano is no big deal since tobiano is an acceptable color but in others I've been worried about crossing it in. But keep in mind, the To gene works much like the Lp gene. If you get too much of it in your cup, it will overflow and create a big splash of white somewhere on the body. However, if you're careful about keeping certain patterns out of your bloodline, like those in NAB and shetlands, you'll nominally keep just the markings and not the patterns.

Ok this isn't my area of expertise but I do know a little from experience... for example:Kingsley wrote:In some of my breeds, the new tobiano is no big deal since tobiano is an acceptable color but in others I've been worried about crossing it in. He is a Arabian Homogenize Tabino Paint, who has a Tabino son and several solid offspring with white socks. Weird... Also follow Pieta's advice... don't cross with Tabino NABs it can be almost impossible to get rid of. To breed socks and other cute markings try a solid NAB (you might luck out and find it carries Tabino)... or try Arab Tabino (my little rebellion) and cross to only certain horses that are only bred to Tabino...and never breed Homo to Homo (two parents with the trait) because you will get the Tabino... in a stronger strain.

Thanks for everyone's help.
I'm finally exploring the leopard and tobiano a bit more in my any-color-goes breeds. I'm also doing an experiment in sooty dapple with Andalusians so that's been fun. Trying to see what it looks like on various colors and if there's any colors it doesn't work with (besides black which will probably not show anything).

We may not reply much back, but we all like to see project progress and those tidbits of 'oh, WOW... that's... unusual'!
Even if it's a little showcase reply in the favorites topic.
