Surprise!

Post by Syn »

Got a double dilute foal out of what I thought was just a plain ol' black mare when I bred her to a buckskin stallion. Apparently at some point I also overlooked the fact that she produced an amber cream foal when bred to a regular amber champagne. Guess she's not just black after all!

What were some of your biggest surprises in breeding?

Ah! It's always nice to discover your black horse was in fact smoky black ;)

I think my biggest surprise was when I finally (and by finally I mean after a long, long time) got a non-dun, non-champagne Aegidienberger. So nice to see a plain base coloured horse after so many diluted ones.

Also, I've been breeding Aegidienbergers for about half a year. I got the first black, no dilutions whatsoever, a month ago. Sometimes agouti bothers me

Same! For a while I had nothing but bays and bay dilutes. I finally got a black mare (or so I thought...) and a couple of chestnuts and I've been trying to spread the non-agouti and red genes around like crazy for more variety.

Actually, when I was first working with Hackneys there was a period where I almost exclusively had double dilutes. It was ridiculous.

Oh yes, I actually had a point in breeding where I had had a fair amount of very dark reds. So dark they looked bay both at birth and later, and I didn't notice them in ages. It was quite a surprise when I discovered like five generations of reds ;)

I had a double dilute born from an Amber champagne and a buckskin. Surprise! Turns out there's pearl hiding in my herd! XD Also bred my pearl stud to a chestnut foundation mare and got a chestnut pearl foal.
