I still count up all the negatives to see what the total could be, but that's mostly just for reference. I always look towards what conformation score I'd need for Strength, Balance, Tempo, or Movement as I'm trying to breed for Dressage based horses. So even though, yes, I count up a total - my main go to is for the actual conformation of a certain part. Such as Croup Height, I need an uphill horse for Dressage and that's extremely hard to get for me.
I don't include the positives in my counting. I score based on "ideal" Dressage Conformation and "Good" vs "Bad" (Bad would be Agility or Speed, for example). Argent is right though, the total score really matters little in the grand scheme of things, because you are trying to build a better horse for whichever discipline or breed standard you hold yourself to.
