Thoroughbred Breeding
I have an Akhal-Teke filly that I hope to breed to a Galloway and then use the resulting foal to create a TB. Problem is, the filly has NO stars on her Thoroughbred evaluation! Is it impossible to get a TB foal with her? If I breed her to a Galloway with a good TB evaluation, and breed that foal to a Arabian x North African Barb which also has a high TB evaluation, will there be any chances of the foal being a purebred TB? Just wondering if I should continue with this filly or if she's a lost cause.

Re: Thoroughbred Breeding
Well it really depends on what she fails on, and how much by. The Galloway too would have to have stats that would get your Akhal-Teke closer to TB stats, but that doesn't necessarily mean the galloway has good TB stats, if that makes sense!

Re: Thoroughbred Breeding
I think I see what you're getting at. For instance if she's too short to have good TB height, breed her to a tall stallion so that the foal will be likely to have green height for TB.
For the particular filly: Body size is 10.8%, TB body size is 15% to 35%, so to get a TB I'd have to breed her to a Galloway that has a higher body size %. She's 98% horse type, TB is 85% to 65%, so I'd have to breed her to a Galloway with lower % horse type. Is that what you mean?

Re: Thoroughbred Breeding
That's exactly what you need to do. The farther down the recipe for a breed you are, the more likely the horses in question will not pass an evaluation for your breed goal. As you get closer to your end result your breeding horses should have at least two stars for the breed evaluation. Ideally the last breeds you need for your goal should have three to four stars. I hope all of this makes sense.

Re: Thoroughbred Breeding
You could try breeding her to a Galloway and then her offspring again, depending on what way you need the stats to go - eg. does she have a foal that needs to have a larger body size, breed it back to a galloway and see what that offspring is like. You can still use an Akhal Teke x Part Galloway to get a Thoroughbred, I've done it a few times when what I bred wasn't what I needed and then you don't need to waste any of your breeding stock
.

Re: Thoroughbred Breeding
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
And yeah I've done some double breeding before, one of my foals didn't turn out Akhal-Teke so I bred her to another Arab x Turkmene and the foal was Akhal-Teke, which was great because then I didn't have to rehome my first filly lol!
