Each breed may have only one topic. The first post in the topic is to be informative. It should help explain the breed, and breeding goals; advice on how to select mares and stallions; and links to ideal Stallions available for breeding.
Keeping a directory of breeders working on the same goal is also helpful.

Alter-Real Breeding Community

The Alter-Real
The Alter-Real is actually not a breed in itself; it is technically a branch of the Lusitano breed. However, even though the Alter-Real breed does not have its own studbook, it still has a fairly long and rich history.
"The Alter Real breed comes from Alter de Chao, a small town in the Alentejo province of Portugal, where the flagship stud is still located. Real is the word for ‘royal’ in Portuguese, the Alter Real is the Royal breed of Alter." (http://www.theequinest.com/breeds/alter-real/) The breed was "established in 1748 by the House of Braganza in Villa do Portel." (http://horsehints.org/Breeds/AlterReal.htm) The Alter-Real has heavy Andalusian influence but Hanoverian, Arabian, Norman, and English bloodlines have also been added. The breed nearly became extinct several times, but thanks to "Dr. Ruy d’Andrade, a few mares and stallions were saved and bred, and In 1942 a small, thriving herd was handed back over to the Ministry of Agriculture for safekeeping where the herd continues to thrive." (http://www.theequinest.com/breeds/alter-real/) Today, the Alter-Real is still a fairly rare breed, but is well known for its excellence in dressage.
