How do I change my horses temperament?

Post by 330 Basin 4 »

Hi there I have recently been trying to change the temperaments of my Belgian mares but just can't find a away. They are currently Even-Tempered and High Strung and i'm trying to get them bombproof. I have been able to do small changes like Calm to Even-tempered but haven't been able to get bombproof. They are both adopted mares (don't know if that makes a difference)

If anyone could help with this it would be greatly appreciated, cheers :)

The only way I can think of is put them in a pasture with no other feed but grass :) Have you tried this yet?

It seems like this is saying to put them on high sugar feeds which I am doing currently and is not working so I will try giving them no sugar and see what happens

Putting them on high sugar feeds will only change their temperament to high strung and spirited, that is if the horses' temperament is changeable, as horses that are born with a bombproof temperament are not likely to change their temperament. Reducing the sugar level in the horses' feed and feed a high fibre diet will calm them down. You can just leave them in the pasture and feed them nothing at all, or you can feed them hay, alfalfa hay or cubes. Hope it helps!

This is correct.
To move the temperament toward bombproof, high fiber is the key (pasture), to move the temperament toward high strung, high sugar is the key (corn has the highest sugar).

It may take awhile. I had a horse that took a year and a half to move one temperament level. Great for keeping it stable, sucked for moving it. Some will move very willing, sometimes as quickly as a turn or two.

The only one that I've personally seen thus far to be stuck, is some bombproofs. That being said, not all bombproofs are stuck.

Personally I've never seen a horse that is born bombproof changing their temperament even on high sugar feed. Is it possible to change their temperament though? I tried feeding them high sugar feed and it didn't seem to work.
