What Age are mare's able to breed?

It is 4 years for mares and 3 years for stallions.

Does anyone know why it's set at those ages for breeding? Is it actually realistic?

Yes, this is realistic. Male horses can actually 'cover' a female before they're 3 years, but these breedings don't often result in a viable pregnancy. Females are similar. In fact, a female younger than four years can actually be injured by the male if she's introduced too young, in such a way that she won't be able to become pregnant later in life (not that it's a regular occurrence, but it can happen and occasionally results in this). Just like many other living creatures in real life.

I think, though I could be wrong, that most cases, the suggestion for mares is 5 years and stallions is 4, though there's less risk of injury for stallions, if the mare is a quiet mare.
