Creating A Breed

Post by flrancho »

I'm looking at ultimately breeding Gypsy Vanners, but to start, I'll need to get some West African Barbs.

One side of the cross is Arabian x North African Barb. My NAB mare is a little on the smaller side and I was unable to find an Arabian stallion that was bigger than her, so likely the foal will be too small for four stars for the West African Barb. Will probably get three. That being said, what will my options be with this foal?

Will I be able to breed it to the recipe NAB x Forest Horse and still have a possibility of getting a WAB. even if one side of the parentage is only three star WAB? Could I breed the Arabian x NAB, back to another NAB and then back to an Arabian to maintain the percentage cross and increase the horses body size; then bred that horse to the recipe horse, to get the WAB?

Just curious how this all works since I'm not expecting to get a four star horse out of the match.

Having 4* parents can make it more likely to create a new breed, but isn't necessary. So long as you have the right cross carrying the right genes you should be good to go. I'm breeding for Australian Stock Horses at the moment and have had mares with no stars give me Australian Stock Horse foals and mares with 4* have given me diddly squat. Once you have the right recipe sorted and (hopefully) the right genes it's all luck of the draw from there. :)
