Horse Gradebook Spreadsheet
I have modified a Google Sheets template meant for teachers to track their students, so that you can use it to assess the quality of your horses by their breeders report. It provides charts that give you an overview of your herd by how many horses reach each 'grade', what the average for each stat in your herd is, and the ability to compare one horse to the herds average, or two horses to each other and the herd average.
It should be fairly self explanatory to use, so if you want to just grab it and take a look you can get it here.
To make a copy simply go to 'File --> Make a Copy' and save it to your Google Drive account.
(You should also be able to go to 'File --> Download as... --> Excel Spreadsheet' if you don't have a Google account, but I don't know how well that works, so I can't recommend it.)
How to use:
Once you have your own copy you'll need to do a bit of data entry. The second tab, named 'Grades' is basically the only sheet you should need to modify much. It has 3 sample horse entries to give you an idea of what to do.
First you enter the horses name in the first column. Then you need to enter their traits as a score out of 10. This is a little subjective, but red traits should always be 0 and green should always be 10. Average traits should be 5, negative traits less than 5 and positive more than 5. You'll need to decide exactly how positive and negative each sentence sounds to you though.
Once you have put in a few of your horses, check out the other tabs and note how they have changed. If you feel my grading system is too strict or too lenient its easy to modify, there are instructions in the sheet.
Enjoy!

This is a great resource. Thanks a lot!

Re: Horse Gradebook Spreadsheet
That's brilliant and such a cool idea. It would be cool to also have something on here that automatically does it!

I love the idea!! But how were you able to put your spreadsheet online?? mine doesn't have that option!

Thankyou! I had fun making it, and I'm glad people think it will be useful.nyraeia wrote:This is a great resource. Thanks a lot!
I think that some aspects of it would fit into the game - like some way to compare to horses. Perhaps a screen where you bring them both up, and it displays them side by side with their info (height, breeder, body size and type percentages bla bla bla) and breeders report.Virgo wrote:That's brilliant and such a cool idea. However, the creation of a 'grade' isn't something I'd like the game to include. Ironic given I created this spreadsheet, yes!? But the breeders report is certainly not infallible, and the Grades therefore need to be taken with a grain of salt. The more numeric something looks the more people see it as objective and infallible.
Example of how the Ivy Grade doesn't always work as an indicator of horse quality: One of my mares has an Ivy Grade of 29%, the lowest score I have. Her offspring, all by mediocre stallions chosen for looks not stats, all have Ivy Grades of 46% or above! One has an Ivy Grade of *58%*, my second highest. Meanwhile, the boy that has the highest grade of 60% has produced two offspring with Ivy Grades of 48%, but the rest of his children have been sold off for having terrible (RED) stats.
Do you mean you have a Google Sheet you wish to share?Ms. Trouble Maker wrote:I love the idea!! But how were you able to put your spreadsheet online?? mine doesn't have that option!
In the top right hand corner under your username/email is a blue button called 'share'. Click this.
The easy way:
In the top right hand corner of the sharing dialogue box, there is a little button called 'get shareable link'. Click it, and it will turn green, having copied the link to your clip board, and set up all the appropriate permissions for people to view your document.
The hard way (ie the way I've always done it until I wrote this up for you and realised I'd been doing it the hard way):
When the dialogue box loads the bottom right hand corner has a tiny grey link called 'advanced'
Clicking this brings up the "sharing settings" page for that document. It displays a sharing link, but currently that wont work. Under the sharing link it should say something about who its accessible to being 'private' and 'you'.
Next to 'Private' click the blue 'change' link. Select your new permissions. My preference is 'on, anyone with the link'.
Keep your access to 'Anyone on the web' + 'can view'. Don't change it to 'edit' because that will let randoms mess with your sheets. Its better to force them to make their own copies.
After you have saved all those new settings, you can copy and share the link wherever you like.
