Silver dapple horses are caused by the silver gene on a black base. Silver is a dominant gene and is generally easy to trace through the generations.

Getting dappling on a bay is a bit more complicated. Currently the only two ways to get a dappled bay (or dappled anything other than black) on HWO are through gray or sooty. Gray dapples are, of course, temporary. They will fade as the horse transitions from its base color to full gray. Sooty dapples do not have that problem. Much like the other dapples, sooty dapples will not be visible at birth and will instead appear as the horse ages. Unlike silver, the exact mechanisms that control sooty expressions aren't known at this point, making it harder to track and predict. The dappled expression of sooty also seems to be rarer than the dappled expression of silver, hence making dappled bays, chestnuts, etc, harder to find than dappled silver blacks.

I do believe that some dapples and sooty are found in Turks though. I’ve seen sooty dapples Turks where the dapple only show up on certain parts of the body.

Ohhhh ok!! See that makes sense then!!! Now I do have a nice sooty chestnut thoroughbred. Can I breed her with a silver dapple and get a sooty dapple then??

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The dapples from sooty and the dapples from silver are controlled differently. You may get lucky and the silver dapple carries the gene for sooty dapples as well, or you could just end up with a plain sooty or another silver dapple. It takes a bit of experimentation to figure out which horses carry the gene to turn sooty into its dappled expression.

Sooty Dapples are available in the game right now, and are more challenging than Appaloosas to find.

A Quick Summary:
Sooty Dapples Master Switch (turns on the appearance of dapples on sooty)
- only available in one breed

Sooty Dapples Strength (3 main genes, in same breed as master switch gene)

In order for dapples to appear on Sooty then Sooty must also appear.
Sooty Summary:
- 4 Master Switch genes found in 3 breeds, and very rarely in 4 other breeds
- 4 expression genes (help to determine over what areas of the horse the sooty will appear), found in 3 breeds and very rarely in 4 other breeds)
- 4 strength genes (help to determine how much sooty appears in the areas where sooty has been determined to appear) found in most breeds to varying degrees
- 1 progression gene (helps to determine how quickly the sooty effect will progress, some breeds will appear sooty faster while others could take their entire life for sooty to appear), Fast Sooty found in 5 breeds, while Old Sooty found in all breeds.

Hint: The breed carrying the Dapple Master Switch is one which rarely appears sooty itself. 1 in 4 horses will carry the gene, but it's a Simple Dominant so only one copy is needed. The gene has been in the game since the beginning so it's possible there could be a horse living now with sooty dapples.

Dang, I would love to see pics or links of a sooty dapple in this game, because I don't think I've seen even one yet.
