About sooty

Post by Malakai10 »

Now, I understand that sooty will not show up on a black coat because the coat is too dark - however, will sooty show up on a diluted black coat? For example, classic champagne or black dun or black pearl?

How many genes control sooty dapple, again? Am I correct in understanding that it requires at least two genes in order to be expressed - the regular sooty gene and then a gene for it to express in dapples?

:| That's an excellent question! I would first say 'yes', because a dilution makes for a lighter coat, thus enabling a re-darkening to occur (like you came to the conclusion of). But I can't say I've ever seen it. So I don't know what the answer should be for this.

Here's the posts that have the sooty information (both sooty and sooty dapples):
Original release: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1601
7th reply is larissar's information on the genes involved: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4511
Mainly dapples discussion: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9466

The announcement post about sooties mentions no mane horses - I must admit, I've never seen one of those. Do you think it's still possible?

They do exist in real life, I think. But I think they don't yet exist in game. I'm of the belief that the post was to show what an artificially shaved mane will look like and maybe what it will look like when the natural one is entered into the game.
I'd say perhaps it is, if we had the genes that were buildable for the manes and tails. But right now, we understand that there is short, medium and long genes, or rather there is just two and they work as an incomplete dominant where the recessive style is the long style. Have one of each, you get a medium mane, have the dominant style, get the short mane. There are two modifiers so far and that's the mowhawk versus ... flat?... I suppose that would be the correct word for it and the pony versus non-pony (bushy mane). There is of course the thick versus thin, but I don't know how that's controlled nor do I really understand if it's buildable or not. I've seen different thicknesses, but it's not really well defined and there hasn't yet been a study on it.

So, perhaps to see if it does exist, I'd suggest going for the mowhawk manes and see if you can't start shortening them to non-existence. But since our foals are always born with a mane, I don't know how to accomplish that... except to keep trying to see if any 'mutation', in our game known better as an accidental surprise, because mutations don't yet exist in-game, happens.

A pity that - we're eventually going to be able to style manes, yes? Probably easier to just wait for that. I'll ask Tom and Larissar if it exists in the game - if it does and your theory with shortening mohawks is correct, perhaps Bitapetrone might have encountered it?

Do the shaved manes exist in the game as seen in this image from this post?

Hopefully we're receive a yea or nay answer.
I like the natural, I think you've already gotten that from our recent talks. But stylizing the manes and tails is also another thing I'm looking forward to. However, I suspect it's quite low on the list of additions... then again, that's also what I thought about quartermarks. I suppose it will depend on if it's an addition, something the horse can where, or if it'll be handled like an alteration... I think, now that I've said it, it'll probably come out as an addition, a wearable. But what will admin do with the existing mane and tail? hmm...

Currently there isn't a way to breed a horse with no mane.
